My review & opinion of the first episode of the new anime for Sailor Moon; Sailor Moon Crystal. I'm going to admit, I was a little worried about this new anime for one of my childhood favourites. I am one for classic animes and Sailor Moon is one that is close to my heart, as it is the first anime that I knew was anime (technical first anime was Gatchaman), and also the first series that I ever created fanart for. I'm happy to say I was delighted to watch this anime after only watching five minutes. Now, most of the animation for new animes I can't stand to watch. Usually because it is either rough and unappealing to me (says the girl who loves the original animation for Sailor Moon and older series), or it's mixing styles which causes me to have a headache. With the new Sailor Moon, I was enchanted by the animation quality and the styling of the characters. It's much more polished than most series that have come out lately. And while it does mix in a bit of CG during the transformation from Usagi to Sailor Moon, it's done seamlessly so that you barely even notice there's a difference. Animation alone impressed me. To add to the animation that blew me away, it stayed true to the original. Most remakes for animes deviate so much from the original that it's actually very annoying. This time, nope, it followed true. Mind you I'm expecting some deviation of the original anime since I've heard that the new series is supposed to follow more closely to the manga, which moves much faster than the 1992 anime. Now, anyone who knows me knows very well that I'm usually not drawn to watching new animes, as they're usually just a repeat of the same things over and over again. Or they're purely just fanservice. I was relieved that they didn't do this with Sailor Moon Crystal. Trust me, I think I would have blown a gasket! I am really tired of pure fanservice animes, Sailor Moon Crystal is a welcome relief. Plus, most know I'm not one for really following new anime either. The last new one that I followed as it was being released was Fate/Zero, and even then, I didn't watch it as religiously as some of my friends. Once every four weeks or so.... if that. I think Sailor Moon Crystal might be the first anime that I watch religiously in a long time. I'm actually looking forward to seeing more episodes! I only have one issue, and it's that the colours for the scout uniforms don't seem to be as bright as before. Minor really, but the toned down hues do fit better with the way this anime is done. I give Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 1, 8/10
